Chapter Fourteen
The sun crept over the horizon, as though sensing the battle that raged within Brand while he lay beside his new wife. He watched her while she slept. Part of him wanted to keep her in his arms forever, run his fingertip along the thick fringes of her lashes, trace the full outline of her lips. He wanted to know her, discover the things that sparked that fiery temper. What made her smile? What brought tears to her beautiful eyes? His gaze swept over a copper curl that had fallen across her cheek. He wanted to touch that curl and kiss her alabaster cheek, but a tightness settled in his chest at the thought. She was his wife. He had made love to her all night long, yet he found it difficult to touch her so intimately now. It was as if doing so would somehow tear open his chest and lay his heart bare before her. Even if he wanted to allow Brynna to touch that raw, wounded part of himself, he couldnât let her. The sting of betrayal still pricked like thorns. Colette had taken too much from him. Still, Brynna was the kind of woman battles were fought over. Loyal, passionate, spirited, gloriously beautiful, compassionate and kind. She radiated heat and perfection, and Brand raised his hand to her hair, wanting her, wanting to lose himself in the warmth that clothed her. He groaned, then turned away from her peaceful face.
Raking his hands through his hair, he rose to his feet, dressed quickly, and left the room.
William stopped him on the stairs, a wide grin brightening his harsh face. âYou missed a spectacular feast, my friend,â he announced then offered Brand a wicked smile. He had seen Brand carry his bride off the day before, and the hungry gleam in both their eyes. âBut Iâm sure you had one of your own, eh?â He slapped the younger knight on the back. âIâm pleased to see that youâve not lost the fire that burned your loins before that de Marson wench entered your life.â
âIt does no good, William,â Brand answered quietly, lifting his eyes to Williamâs before he left. âIâve lost something far more priceless. I donât want to love her.â
